MPT’s CEO Recognized as a “Game Changer” in business and community service.
Birmingham, AL – November 2, 2018: Edward K. Aldag, Jr., Medical Properties Trust’s founder and CEO, has been selected as a “Game Changer” in business and community service by The Vulcans Community Awards.
Presented on behalf of Vulcan Park and Museum by Eric Jack, Dean of the Collat School of Business at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the Vulcans Award recognized Aldag “for his leadership, vision, innovation and generosity.”
As Dean Jack said, “In, 2003, Ed took entrepreneurial risks and founded Medical Properties Trust, a real estate investment trust, with a vision to provide capital to cash-strapped hospitals and rehab centers. Today, MPT’s market cap is over $5 billion.”
“Guided by the principles of humility, gratitude, generosity and civic engagement, Ed and his company have donated millions of dollars that touch more than 145 organizations in this community,” Dean Jack noted.
Inspired by the colossal statue of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and metals that has stood as the iconic symbol of Birmingham, Alabama, since 1904, The Vulcans Community Awards recognize citizens from across a seven-county region who exemplify civic pride, leadership and progress. The Vulcans Awards statuette, which is a small replica of the 56-foot iron statue that towers over the city, was presented to Aldag on November 1st.
A native of Eufaula, Alabama and a finance graduate of the University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Business, Aldag conceived the idea of providing capital to hospitals via long-term sale-leaseback agreements. MPT’s innovative financing model unlocks the value of hospital real estate, which can then be deployed for acquisitions, recapitalizations and facility improvements.
Celebrating its 15th year in business, Medical Properties Trust, Inc. (NYSE: MPW) has become the leading provider of real estate capital to more than 275 hospitals on two continents and the owner of more than 32,500 hospital beds across five countries.
Under Aldag’s leadership, MPT also has grown into a highly respected corporate donor in Birmingham and beyond. Inspired by Aldag’s example, MPT executives and employees serve actively as volunteers, board members, fundraisers and supporters for a host of worthy causes.
